Bringing the Children Home
However, we need everyone to pull in the same direction. If you think you may be a descendent of the ‘Chickamauga’ or Northern Cherokee, speak up! If your family has told you that they are ‘Black Dutch’, speak up!! If you want your children and grandchildren to know their heritage and not let it die, then, speak up!!! Do it now before it is too late. Please remember that just because you carry a White Card to prove you are a Red Man, does not make you Cherokee. Your heart, your soul, your actions, and the way you care for your people; federally recognized or not, is how the Grandfathers will see you once you cross the river. If you do nothing else today, start researching your family history and find out where they lived and if there is anything you can do to prove you are Cherokee. Your local reference librarian can get you pointed in the right direction and show you how to do family research. However, remember that many states still look down on Native Americans or those descended from them. It is best not to mention that you are trying to find out, how much Indian you are.
"Cherokee Blood, if not destroyed, will win its courses in beings of fair complexions, who will read that their ancestors became civilized under the frowns of misfortunes, and the causes of their enemies." John Ridge – Cherokee. *2
"No amount of white blood shall dilute the pride of the Cherokee people - NOR erase their memories." Chief Charles Hicks --- Cherokee *2
Update: 1999: the group known as the Northern Cherokee of the Old Louisiana Territory #100b, supposedly still led by Beverly Baker split from NCN shortly after the BIA letter of 1999 was delivered to Chief Grey Owl, Beverly Baker and Don Coombs. Group #100a, the White and Sac River bands, led by Kay Stockton, decided to officially split with NCN in January of 2013. With the newly passed revisions of the Federal Recognition Process, otherwise known as “Part 83”, these groups are now known by the Federal Office of Recognition (FOA) as splinter groups. A “kinder and gentler” U.S. Government has reached out to bring all available tribes into being recognized. That is if they can provide the proper documentation. And that is where the NCN is today.
