Forced Removal
By the years 1835 to 1839, with the Trail of Tears travesty,
it had become more dangerous than ever to be Cherokee.
Many Cherokees had taken on new identities by claiming to be
French, Black Dutch, Spanish, or even White if they could pass as such.
So many Cherokees spent their entire lives hiding in plain site
and the culture was lost to their children and grandchildren.
With the Civil War, there were more problems due to most Cherokees
siding with the South and problems with deciding to follow
Levi Adams after the death of James Green in 1866.
Levi Adams was only 1/8 Cherokee and had fought with the North.
